Hail Hail!

Hailstorms were common during March-April in Dehradun of yesteryears. The kids had fun playing with ice pellets though the storms completely destroyed the standing crops. Farmers should be thankful to climate change, at least the hail storms are a rarity now. There has been only one major hailstorm in Dehradun in last five years. It ocurred in March 2007 and gave our lawn a snow-white look. The ice took many hours to melt and sweaters and shawls came out!

  1. "hail hail"...good one!
wow...even the pots are piled with hail. In this photo it seems to be setting into an ice sheet...skating anyone? ;)
It's nice to have your own little patch of green or a courtyard. Even jaggu's gleaming white tiled courtyard is so inviting...tho one day Tommy will make it much less inviting to strangers ;)

ps: rm, I got to work hard because I'm homeless!!!!!! I've parked myself in this room for 15 years. I got to buy my own sweet dwelling :) No matter where...I want to save up 7 lacs or so in 1 year. Then I can buy a little 1-bed house and furnish it beautifully!
It woulda been bigger but I want to develop rental property with the reminder, it will be a decent retirement income for me.

  2. This is my dad's house. I am like you - houseless though not homeless! Our house is very small just three very small rooms but have got a good 100 sq yard lawn!

All the best for your homing plans! Hope you will invite your trader pals for house warming!

    ReplyDelete
  3. rm: wow, that's a nice big lawn, as big as a room I'd say! We have a big terrace here...but hey, this is Pune...nobody goes out unless they want to suffocate lol.

As for the house warming...of course! and biryani will be on the menu, from a nice restaurant, not a packet ;D (cause if I made it u won't be able to eat it)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh wait, sorry, 900 sq ft lawn is bigger than our whole house! whoa! we have 800 sq ft house + 500 sq ft adj terrace.

    ReplyDelete
  5. out here nobody buys houses in yards nor vegetables in kilos ;)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well, I guess we are evenly matched in area! Our house measures not more than 400 sq ft!

Houses are measured in square feet here too but plot's rates are quoted in square yards.

  7. I have set an income target for myself... $200000 this year (2009).
I went into a depression primarily because I felt under-appreciated for my work and other writers churned out junk, made much more money. If my clients can't tell either ways, why not just do work that's up to a competitive standard instead of making them rich with best-sellers?
Something I didn't want to accept for 5 years...finally hit home.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 2 million US$! Well that surely calls for an anticipatory celebration. :)

It is really very difficult to adjust our work standards to anything less than what we think is perfect. I can understand how hard it must have been for you to compromise on that. But that is what marketeers give their clients all the time, not what they need but what makes them happy.

    ReplyDelete
  9. rm: You understood it so well.
For years I have just told myself that if I focus on quality, my day will come...But this market is not quality oriented...if you want to thrive here you have got to do a lot of Infosys-type lower-end work....And it's better not to put excessive pains into that type of work.
Some quality projects come in but it's not often.
For a few years I found my happiness within myself and a few good clients...But now I'm frustrated...Time to get real.
Many others are making in the same range and they're no better. Let me experience some success and money too....

  10. rm, today one legal clerk was very kind to me, he handed me an appeal to study for a few hours so that I could understand the format. The lawyers were quoting kinda high. How can I pay him back rm?? You got any ideas....I can't pass him a buck without the other clerks noticing. What shall I do, give him a gift or something?? I don't want to offend him either

  11. The art of bribing has passed me by. I just have not been able to learn that skill of surreptitiously passing on the greenbacks while acting humble all the time - so I engage a broker or some other middlemen for those jobs which can't be done without bribing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. thank you for the promopt reply...He was genuinely nice tho and didn't expect anything. He was helping others out too. Really, without his help I would have had to engage a lawyer just to get the format right.

    ReplyDelete
  13. In that case it would make sense to write a letter of appreciation (in your wonderful style) and send to his superiors. Such a guy would like to be appreciated for the extra effort he is making to be helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  14. guess so...will see if I can find a way to thank the kind soul.

  15. have a great weekend! :)

  16. Why selling puts rm? bullish?!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Not at all Uma. I am as bearish as they come. But I am not too sure about the time the market will take to correct - so by buying 2500PE and selling 2400PE I have tried to bring down the cost of PUT i bought while at the same time limiting my max probable profit and loss. Just a learning strategy!

    ReplyDelete
  18. strange, I would sell calls if I were bearish, sell the near call and buy the far call to cap risk in case of unexpected upmove

  21. you're welcome, tho it was just my line of thinking...
    Hows Holi in Dehradun? :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Holi in Dehradun is very mild though I avoid even that. Since last maybe 30 years I just get hold of a book and settled down in my room to celebrate holi. Celebration also includes consumption of plenty of gunjhias!
p.s. This holi i am rereading 'Pickwick Papers'!

    ReplyDelete
  23. sounds like a peaceful, solitary Holi...not too diff from my own.
rm, it rained here today! Beautiful showers, now the air is so clean and fresh

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is wonderful news! I like rains. Once I rode my puny bike from Delhi to Dehradun during Monsoons. I got soaked and evaporation-dried maybe three or four times during the 250km ride!
This year the rains have eluded Dehradun except for two days in early February. Hope March-April will be better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. that must have been a real adventure rm! those were the days!!
I hope it rains more! winters are hard on the lungs...we need some springtime freshness!
hope you had a wonderful weekend. Missed u.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It felt good biking in rains. But the best was when i biked in winters. I wore such a layer of inners and jackets, socks, mufflers etc. that I used to almost fall asleep due to the warmth even though early mornings in January were just freezing cold. Once I dropped a friend at Meerut (just 60 kms from Delhi but my friend was not equipped for a bike ride), the guy was almost frozen stiff when he tried to alight at Meerut. He had to gulp down a couple of glasses of hot dhaba chai before he was able to stand without support!

    ReplyDelete
  27. rm: like you I am also warm-blooded (lol) my sister's hands and feet almost freeze over in the cold but mine are much warmer.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think it's a sign of good health!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually I am the cold-blooded (lol) type like fish or frog! But i used layers and layers of clothing and protective covering from head to foot for winter rides on bike which kept me warm.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I see! lol.
hey rm, I am really really looking forward to 3200 now or 3300. I know I will short at 3200 itself probably

    ReplyDelete
  31. You could get that opportunity by next week. But the upsurge in commodities suggests that there could be a bigger upside this time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dhanya ho! Dhanya ho vatsa! You saved my trip to the Court, I was going to go tomorrow, but then u said it's a holiday and I checked...yep it's a Maharashtra State holiday so civil courts likely to be closed...thank you!!
    Uma

    ReplyDelete
  33. The only holidays I know about are the stock market holidays! The next one is on 10th April and then 14th April.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yea! so many holidays this month, even I was surprised...! Thank you for the update...u always save me trouble of checking during holidays! I'm never up-to-date.
rm, during Nifty closing Europe had a strong open and I was scared...but held my short. Hopefully now Dow looks in the mood to oblige

    ReplyDelete
  35. The way the midcap and small cap are bursting at their seams would suggest that there is some upside still left in this rally.

Yesterday my google email notifier went for a nap so I did'nt get any notice of fresh postings on Jaggu's blog. Since the market was cracking in such a big way - I thought that you and Jaggu must be busy shorting everything in sight. :)

The blog surely needs a fresh post - will look into my image files this weekend

  47. Dear Mr Sharma,

Greetings! It's good to know that you are based in Dehradoon. I am looking to shift out of Delhi, to a place where I can feel summer breezes, winter chill, and ofcourse the mountains! I need a very hi speed broadband too alongwith GSM network, can you suggest such a place in the mountains? I would be much obliged,

    With Warm Regards,

    *MJ Akhtar*

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dear Mr Akhtar,

That is a wonderful idea - shifting out of Delhi. Dehradun has got everything you want, summer breeze - temperature touched 41 degree this april, winter chill - for almost two months one feels the need to heat the house, mountains are just a stone's throw away - if you have arms strong enough to throw a stone 10 kms! We also have three months of rain which may be too much for your comfort.
So far only BSNL is providing high speed broadband but there is an IT park and IT SEZ coming up (provided the economy picks up) and other telecom companies are laying optical fibre cables. All the GSM and CDMA service providers have a presence here. But Dehradun is in the foothills.
Only hill city in Uttarakhand with sufficient infrastructure could be Nainital and BSNL does provide broadband there too. But if you don't mind living a couple of hours drive away from hills then you may also like places like Kashipur, Haldwani and Ramnagar.

    With Best Regards.

    R M Sharma

    ReplyDelete
  49. Dear Mr Sharma,

Greetings! Thanks for your prompt reply! I expected you to have an amazing knowledge relating to Uttarakhand, and you haven't let me down. I think Dehradoon would be the best option in terms of Communication Infrastructure. And one could get close to the mountains as much as practically possible! But is BSNL Broadband reliable? That's the only concern now.

Thanks for clarifying my doubts, would surely consider shifting to D'doon within an year or so.

    With Warm Regards,

    *MJ Akhtar*

So...we need to do something about your over-active mind w.r.t. my comment. Think more about stocks! ;D
looks like other folks are also looking to escape from the city and clack away at the keyboard from a window overlooking the hills...just my kinda dream!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Uma:

I think my mind is permanently underactive! And you can't blame me for interpreting those lines in the way I did - show them to any one with a sense of humor and you will get the same reaction.

I was also surprised on getting MJ's query - you asked almost the same questions, is'nt it? Amazing - just four visitors to my blog and two of them asking the same question!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dear Mr RMS & Ms Uma,

Greetings! Actually the link to this blog was forwarded to me by Dinesh ji. I am tired of living in the big city, being a scholar by nature, I need peace, mountains, springs, birds etc., to survive and thrive. I can't continue to be dead while alive. So I had been on the lookout for someone who could give me some good advice and lo! I found RMS ji.

    Thanks,

    With Warm Regards,

    *MJ Akhtar*

    ReplyDelete
  55. rm: agree on that count...the comment on tommy blog.
as for hills & broadband combo...well we were talking stocks long before that topic cropped up! lol

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dear MJ

I am grateful to Dinesh ji for an introduction to you. I feel that Dehradun could be just the right place for you. I go for morning walks in the reserve forests nearby and continue to make new sightings of bird. The first thing I did when I began my walks in the forest back in 2004 was to get a copy of Dr Salim Ali's 'Book of Indian birds'. I bored my friends with my sighting of birds and quoted details from the book till they got tired of me!
Welcome to the enchanted forests of Dehradun!

    Best regards.

  59. rm: you seem to be riding the market really well...! did u sell of CEs today? If so seems a well-timed move which is probably going to be further confirmed in coming months....I guess so anyways. Wish u good profits

    ReplyDelete
  60. Dear Akhtar Saheb,

Thank you for the wonderful song! I listened to it immediately after the bird songs - on coming back from the jungle walk! It was so good!

    Best regards.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Uma:

You may get that feeling because I don't post all my trades on jaggu's blog! I did sell a pair of CE and PE but the volatility unnerved me so I covered the short options today at a miniscule profit. I guess I'll have to get the hang of handling nifty futures (try to be on right side of it) before I can successfully write options. I am trying!

    ReplyDelete
  62. rm: yes it takes a mix of both courage and cool headed calculation. But you have it in you, I think. Please don't run up any losses. I want you to make it!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Aha! Jungle walks!!!
We had a slight drizzle yesterday but nothing since...

    ReplyDelete
  64. I try to avoid losses but it is not always possible to do that. And thanks for your wishes! Maybe we could all make it to Jaggu's yacht. :)

Early morning weather is very pleasant here. But the rains are missing - except for scattered drops a few days back which brought down the temperature drastically.

    ReplyDelete
  81. rm, your prediction came true today, I think u had talked of 4300 levels for nifty or something like that. I'm glad I'm out of this shyt. While Im very tempted to build shorts now...I feel this market really is not a place where one can prove any point at all. And maybe that's the whole point, that there IS no point. From 2250 - 4300! Now to see what UPA does for the business climate with their new-found stability.
I feel like swallowing cough syrup by the gallon...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Uma, the earlier part of rise was due to genuine cash buying. FIIs were net buyers in cash since April but most of the analysts were just caught in the web of their own imagination and were sure of another lower bottom. Now it might go the other way round, the commentators and analysts will sing songs about the glories of Indian markets and all those guys who were sitting on the sidelines from 2500 to 3500 will start buying as if there is no tomorrow. I guess the lower circuits are not very far off!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Taling of cough syrup reminds me of Shankar Sharma's face on CNBC TV. He looked like somebody had poured buckets of cough syrup down his throat! :)

    ReplyDelete

  86. wassup rm! hows your educational journey going...? Mind if I ask you to share with us with a tutorial on your blog?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hi EB,

You must be joking! We are just following ss on his live trades, asking questions (only I ask questions - none else is as dumb as me!). Just the usual things - for the last three days we are trying to trade break-outs. Some successful some loss-making, the usual trader stuff. The instrument used is nifty futures. ss helps us by displaying different positions on icharts. Incidentally i have subscribed to icharts for one month!

I don't think there is anything there for you or Jaggu to learn. It is a basic course for people like me (with zero knowledge and infinite pretensions) LOL.

I hope you have fully recovered by now. How are you coping with those blood-sucking clients?! Just take their money and give them peanuts in return. :)

    Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  88. lol! I've run into slightly better clients now...American clients are not closing projects lately, they just ask a lot of Q's and...Poof! But a nice lady in S'pore gave me her business :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. say rm, I don't think this market will rally further.

    ReplyDelete
  90. EB:

LOL. remember you have been short since 3300! I have stopped predicting the markets and just trying to benefit from the trend and failing miserably. :)

  109. RM, Since you're following this great guru of yours...I mean no disrespect but I want to give my 2 cents. I have found that strategy/analysis doesn't work in the market, intuition does. So don't try to apply 'strategies/ techniques/analysis'. Whatever you were doing was working fine, do more of it.
Accept your success, somehow success is not easy to accept esp if your friends failed at something. I think you should realize that success in stock markets is no fluke, if you're making money consistently then you've got something going for you...if not...there seems to be no SYSTEM that works here. And the quest to find one might not be a successful one. Just one way of looking at things

Sorry for my long absence. My father is in hospital - getting better now, so i am mostly sitting idle in the hospital room watching brave guys eating insects on discovery channel!

I am out of markets till dad is discharged. In any case I don't buy options now unless they are for intraday - the premium is so high that you need the market to crash or climb skyhigh just to get back your premium. Not worth it!

Have a great time shorting the markets - if your clients give you time for that!

  117. Hi EB,

Dad is recovering slowly after three bouts of hospitalization. I spend most of the last month sitting in different nursing homes and managed to attract flu viruses!
Things appear better now, hopefully life will be back to normal in the coming days.

    Best regards.

  118. rm: Sorry to hear about the infections...but can totally relate. I hope your recovery is a swift one.
Must have been emotionally a rough time for you. But so amazing that you were there for your dad, dropping every thing else when it really mattered. I so respect you for that!
Good to see you back on jaggu's board and rocking!
    love,
    Uma

  120. Thanks EB!

I guess that was the only thing to do - did'nt have much choice. :)
My dad won't agree with the wonderful son bit - he almost hates me after these two months of constant do's and dont's I keep on drilling into him!

I hope you are enjoying your work. May God shower you with kind and generous clients!

  121. rm: I guess your dad can't help feeling bad cause of his health. We live in this tiny hurting body after all...sometimes it won't let us see the good in others cause it's broken.
So yep work is taking off...In the sense that I'm more focused now but the economic cycle will do its own thing.
    take care then...
    Uma
