  1. I just realized that you created this new post...
So my boyfriend has booked a whole trekking vacation for us, which starts with Haridwar and ends with Dehradun. Since we're spending 2 days in Dehradun there might be some time to catch up! In other words I might get to see you after around 14 yrs of chatting online!

    1. Great!

I created this post because I read a 3 year old comment of Jaggu to insert a new post as comment thread was getting too long! Savere ka bhoola bhatka ... ;-)

  2. Hi Rakesh! How are you what's up. It was nice meeting you the other day. We went up to FRI but both gates were closed. It did look good though, like an old forest with fir trees (or whatever those trees were, I am not good with identifying them). Your tip about the airport metro helped a lot. It was really convenient, we were even able to check in our baggage before we took the metro. I think this facility is available only for vistara and air india and luckily we traveled by air india. It was like we were in a different country. I'd heard of such things in Germany but didn't know this existed in New Delhi too - that too for years! Delhi is quite advanced compared to other cities which struggle with horrible infra. Delhi has no budget constraints, unlike Mumbai, which actually generates most of the tax revenue but has shitty infra nevertheless.
After two days my knees still hurt, I think the trek was too much for me. But I enjoyed the scenery and it was nice meeting you. Thanks for making the time.
I had commented here earlier, but I think my net was too slow and it didn't get posted.
So I guess you're a freelance writer now? Do point me to some of your writing. Give my regards to your mom.

    1. Hi Uma!
With all that high altitude trekking you did in Valley of flowers and Hemkund, it is but natural for the knees to feel overworked, guess they will be OK in a week or so but do keep them busy with more such treks. ;-)
City check-in is a function of airlines and airport and has nothing to do with Delhi budget . GMR at Delhi is one of the top airports in the world, I guess GVK, BOM is far behind.
I am not a freelance writer but a freelancer (code word for being unemployed :-D).

      regards

    2. Yes I understand that the check-in is a function of airlines and airport, but they have blended it very seamlessly with the metro. We were able to check in the baggage at New Delhi Rly Stn metro stop, rather than carrying it all the way to airport. I doubt very many metro stations offer this facility, though they might offer connectivity to airports. It was very convenient, not having to carry it all the way...And the metro train also had built-in racks to store luggage. I was quite impressed, to think they have all this dedicated infra to ferry passengers from the railway station to airport. Pune doesn't even have a dedicated airport! The runway is shared with the air force base, it was the IAF that originally built it. It's quite over-crowded now and few international flights take off from Pune, but that new airport remains a blueprint.
There is no proper public transport either in Pune. Just some rattly old buses which are as unpredictable as rain. I can go on and on...

Anyway...I think it's great to be a freelancer. You might not have a steady income but there's more free time. I also belong to the 'special' breed of people who cannot hold on to a 9-5 job. I don't know how people do it. They can survive the rate race, they can live on the assembly line, but we can't. I'm not complaining...I think we're trading security for freedom.

As for my knees....They are as creaky as our public transport now! One week has gone by...some improvement is there, but not much.
But I am much encouraged by your kind words...Hopefully they will recover and survive more such treks. That is, if I ever pick up the courage to go on another!! :p

  3. Hemkund, I think, is one of very tough treks with such steep ascent and low oxygen at 14000 ft. I think now you will find other treks below 10000 ft altitude very easy. And do share the pictures of your trek, maybe you can do that on your blog or instagram!

    1. Hi Uma! I am fine. Yep, minimum temperature is hovering around 9-10 degrees these days, day's are warm in the sun but cold indoors. Great weather with crystal clear blue skies!
I have taken up cycling again (after taking second opinion from a Doc who said my arm does not need bone-grafting) and doing 10-15 kms of cycling daily.
How is Atul? Say my hello to him. I hope you folks are enjoying long walks in this weather in Pune.

    2. I'm so glad to hear that you have taken up cycling again. 10-15 kms per day is great. You have good stamina.
Hope your arm gets stronger. Has the doc asked you to do any physio exercises?
My knees are much stronger now. God, they were so bad after the trek.
I've given up tea and coffee and it will hopefully help my bones get stronger. The constant acidity was not helping...
Min temps of 9 to 10 degrees don't sound too cold. It's perfect cycling weather! :)
Out here I've found another hill to explore. I heard that it's going to be razed and bulldozed to make way for another flyover. So I visited out of curiosity and it's so beautiful...Big parts of it are thickly forested, after decades of hard work by volunteers. I shudder to think of the day when it will be gone :(
Why do they build more flyovers? People will just keep buying more cars and filling them up and demanding more flyovers. Why don't more people take up cycling! :(

    3. Hi Uma, Min temp of 9-10 degree does not sound too cold but here the duration of minimum temperature is rather long. So 10 degree here seems more troublesome to me then 10 degrees in Delhi - or maybe because of age factor, I was all of 16 years younger in Delhi. :-D

  13. Hi Rakesh!
Hope you and your family are well.
So now it seems that Uttarakhand is also not a corona-free state. I hope there are no cases in Dehradun.
Pune and Mumbai have the highest case counts.
Here in Pune, whenever I go out for groceries I get swamped by people asking for help...Things are really bad and I think crime will go up.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Uma!
    All is well here.
Dehradun, like most other places, is suffering from Tabligi Jamat's cases. Before that there were very few cases related to forest officers who returned from official trip to europe. But now every colony of peaceful people is turning out to be a corona source
Otherwise things are well under control, volunteers are giving out ready to eat food packets and Govt is distributing 3 months ration to ration card holders or 1 week food packet (containing wheat flour, daal, salt, oil) to those who don't have card or money to buy ration. Plenty of voluntary organizations working all over city to see that no one goes hungry. Great job by Health workers, Sanitation workers, Police and volunteers. _/\_

    1. In Mumbai all the Dharavi cases can be linked to Tablighi - one of the residents had given a room on rent to a tablighi participant. The old man died but he was diagnosed rather late and by then many others were infected.
Now the restrictions keep getting stricter and stricter. Our locality is a green area within a red zoned city, but still the restrictions are crazy. We have to buy essentials from 10 am-2 pm (until 3 days ago, it was 10 am to 12 noon)...Q's everywhere...Luckily I have a way to escape the Qs. I cycle 5 kms further to another locality, where there are more shops. I just don't have the patience to stand in mile-long Qs.

    3. Eyes are slowly getting less worse! There is 10 days embargo on gooing outdoor and 15 days ban on headwash, but these days going out mostly means a free headwash ;-)

  16. I have shortlisted this ebike, it is completely made in India and pretty sturdy plus it has great rear shocker so perfect for our roads which are mostly almost like offroading specially in monsoons. :-)

    1. Hi Rakesh! Hope you are enjoying your ebike. How do you like it? The rear shocker looked sturdy and the bike looked well designed overall. It actually looks better than mine.
Have been tracking you on strava. But from the stats it looks like you are cycling in manual mode as the speed is same as the pre-ebike days.
So I guess it's raining there a lot more than in Pune. Out here, the clouds gather and then drift away....I don't know how long it will take before we get persistent showers.
The hills are green and I am enjoying my walks. I always forget to turn strava on (one of the reasons for that is, my stats are really depressing. I try so hard but I don't get any faster, I just get tendonitis...) Anyways...there's an app called impact which I use. Even if I forget to start it, it somehow tracks my steps in the background. And it's got some charity sponsors, who donate Rs 10 for every km you walk. So that's another reason to use it.

      Delete
    2. My ebike is still a distant dream. Even though all ebike manufacturers claimed that their ebike was completely made in India, the moment chinese shipments were delayed all the ebikes disappeared from the shelves! So, I'll have to wait till the alleged manufacturers but actual assemblers get their supply chain in order. I was forced off my cycle for almost ten days as my rear tyre burst after 5000 kms travel. It was only on Friday that I could go to market, get new pair of tyres/tubes and get it installed on Saturday. It rained all morning on Sunday so today was the first cycling day after a long time.
Yeah, strava has to be started to record the ride. Google fit does it without starting but not accurately. And Google is such a large company that feedbacks doesn't matter to them - probably they have a big recycle bin in their hqrs where all the feedbacks are directly routed ;-)

      Delete
    3. My ebike wala told me that he got his setup in China for around 20 lacs, whereas it would have taken at least 5 crores in India. So that's a big difference to a small start-up. He's one of those Modi bhakts (have been reading his status messages and the nationalism is pretty strong) so he feels rather guilty about outsourcing from China.

      Delete
    4. Yep, manufacturing is heavily subsidized in China, that is how it has captured the global manufacturing and made other nations just small time traders totally at China's mercy. It was their long term strategy to establish their control over the whole world and Clinton, Bush & Obama's 24 years rule helped China achieve its objective. Now Trump wants Manufacturing back in US so everybody hates him ;-)

      Delete
    5. If you think that's the reason why the world hates Trump, you might be mistaken. America's war-mongering and their strategy of destabilizing democracy, installing dictators and heavily arming them has backfired on them.
US has borrowed so heavily from China that they have no muscles to flex and can barely function. It's just a matter of time before their economy collapses and I would put the entire blame on their extreme war-mongering

      Delete
    6. I think India got a fair chance at manufacturing. For decades after independence, we did not allow outsiders to set up manufacturing plants in India or forced them into partnerships with Indian partners. What happened? We just had to live with sub-standard products which fell apart or were crudely made. No wonder China swept up the Indian markets...

      Delete
    7. lol, America's war mongering and installing puppets policy continues since post World War II. You can't give the credit for that to Trump, in any case he is not that imaginative ;-)
US borrowing from China is in a circuitous way, it is China which has invested in US Currency and securities in the fond hope that one day it can arm-twist US because it has control over so much US currency. But for that to happen Chinese currency needs to be become a global currency - highly unlikely any time soon given total non-transparency of Chinese economy.

    8. Look at the what Trump did in Iran, he is continuing the legacy of other Republican presidents in Iraq. These people never learn. Obama on the other hand, managed to capture and kill Osama bin Laden without any wars.
Similarly, Trump's rush to open up the US economy amid the pandemic has caused their entire health infra to crash.

  17. I'm going to try out google fit and see how it goes. Congrats on completing 5,000 Kms but sorry to hear about the tyre burst. Lucky it did not cause any fall/accident. I don't know how much I've done on my old bike. My front tyre got a tear and my dad got it patched and stitched up. I was a bit apprehensive about that, but it's been a few months since then and it's going well. The treads aren't worn.

Sorry for that glitch. I just exported the data for the regular market timings - totally forgot about the NSE extended session that day. I have updated the data now but there is one issue. My data utility only exports data for the symbols which are live, NIFTY21FEBFUT is not live any more. But the NIFTY_I data upto 25th is for FEB series only so if you are maintaining contractwise data then you'll need to do a little juggling by importing NIFTY_I data as NIFTY21FEBFUT till 25th of FEB.
